Meaning of Phrases

Phrases can be characterized as a specific group of words, which perform the function of a part of speech. However, they cannot be used separately as a sentence, as they have neither subject, not a predicate. Nevertheless, the combination of words in a phrase can function as a single part of speech. For example, phrases can represent a noun, adjective, adverb, etc.

The following combinations of words can be characterized as phrases:

On the table;
Above the ground;
Under the chair.
As it was mentioned above, these phrases carry some meaning but cannot serve as a separate sentence. They can form a complete sentence only in combination with other parts of speech. For example:
The vase is on the table.
The cat is under the chair.
The ball flew above the ground.

Properties of Phrases

The properties of phrases include the following:

Phrases are formed by a combination of words.
Finite verbs are never parts of the phrases;
Phrases may include non-finite verbs (gerunds, infinitive, etc).
Separately used phrases are deprived of meaning.
In order to form a grammatically correct sentence, the phrases should be used with other parts of speech.
Toppertag:www.educationbeyondborders.org,2017-03-31:2213732:Topic:732842017-03-31T17:55:55.433ZWorld Class Schoolshttp://www.educationbeyondborders.org/profile/WorldClassSchools

In this week’s episode, Dave talks to Noble Kelly about just this subject. Noble is the founder of Education Beyond Borders, an organization that is “devoted to closing the global education divide through teacher professional development and community education.” Noble talks about the work of the organization in South Africa as well as other initiatives they are taking on. Most importantly, how they are helping to meet one of the United Nations Millenium Development Goals to achieve universal primary education around the world.

Greetings Fellow Educators,

I have been running a project called FACE IT-TRACE IT-ERASE IT for two years. It is a three Phase assignment that allows students from all over the world to work together to solve serious issues such as pollution, government corruption, the education of women, and many more.
Greetings Fellow Educators,

I have been running a project called FACE IT-TRACE IT-ERASE IT for two years. It is a three Phase assignment that allows students from all over the world to work together to solve serious issues such as pollution, government corruption, the education of women, and many more. The students are made into teams according to the topic they pick. Then they meet at my website and work together to complete the 3 Phases.

Phase 1, FACE IT: Students must describe their topic and what it means to them.

Phase 2, TRACE IT: Students develop a thesis and engage in a research project together that supports

their thesis.

Phase 3: ERASE IT: Students develop ways to solve their issues and present them in a digital movie form

or a written form. All products are up to the students and must be approved.

So far we have had over 300 students from 5 continents participate. Trophies are given to students that receive a 100% in all 3 phases. Certificates of Excellence for students with A averages and certificates of Achievement for all students that complete the 3 phases with at least an 80%.

We are looking for 21st century teachers that are seeking to engage their students in a significant event that will change their lives forever. The future of education is collaborative, project and product oriented projects. That is exactly what we provide. You can see much of our work at www.gceafghanistan.ning.com. We use that site because it has been offered to us for free by the US State department who help us keep an eye on the interactions between the students. It is a robust site that allows the transfer, uploading and downloading of large files.

We plan to start the third session in September, 2011. If you are interested in making educational history please contact me at streljg@d11.org. I would be happy to send you all the materials you need with complete explanations. All work is national standards based. This project can be as simple as you like or as vigorous as you want. It can last a week, month, semester or year. It is up to you and your administration. I look forward to meeting you.

My project is called FACE IT-TRACE IT-ERASE IT. In this project students get to pick from a list of 15 of the most important issues facing the world today. These issues were selected from the United Nations, Relief International, and several other NGO's.

Once the students have selected their topic they will be grouped with four other students from around the world that have selected that topic. These students will begin to contact each other using the NING sites or whatever sites they prefer, and they will choose the roles for each team members. I have a list of the roles.

FACE IT: Once the teams are created and the roles are determined, each member from each group will write a paragraph describing and defining their Issue. The team’s members will share their paragraphs with each member. The team will make corrections on the paragraphs, and then submit 5 paragraphs to the project coordinator (me for now). The project coordinator will present a grade to the team. Each of the three phases of this project will be graded with the same weight. The final grade will be an average of all three phases.

TRACE IT: In phase 2 of this project the team will begin its research into the issue (topic). The team will present one research project representing the work of all members. The team leader will make sure that all members are participating. The project must be pre-approved by the project coordinator. It can be any multi-media presentation as long as it utilizes technology. The team Checker will make sure that everyone is working on the project and sending in their work. Teams will gather data on their issue using Microsoft or Open Office files. Graphs, charts, statistics will be required to give evidence that all team members have achieved a proficient level of understanding of their issue. They will do this by using any technologies available to gather supportive data. When done, the team will present the project to the coordinator for a grade.

ERASE IT: The final phase of the project can be a video presentation done by each member of the group. Erase it means that the group needs to collectively create a video presentation or a product of their choosing to discuss a solution to the Issue the group has been working on. If a member of the group does not have access to digital video equipment that member must give their information to the team leader who will assign a member to speak for them. The team will pass the video files to each other over the Internet. The team Presenter will compile the video clips into a single, 10 minute video that will be made available on www.gceafghanistan.ning.com. If a video is not possible the individual, or the group, can present a solution in any appropriate manner. Our project offers a vast array of products that are acceptable.
