During the years I taught in Fort McMurray, I learned by teaching students from a wide range of cultures, from our Canadian Dene and Cree Nations to children from India and other parts of Asia. Now retired, I am blessed to live in a part of Edmonton with many Sikh, Muslim and Hindu families and when I substitute in a school I am blessed to meet and learn from students from many religious backgrounds as well as ethnic and racial backgrounds. One thing keeps hitting me. To children who attend diverse schools, their friends and playmates are other children just like them with the same interests and many different interests. Children who learn in an atmosphere of diversity do not expect others to be like them and know a great deal more about how to make peace, not just live in peace. These are the children who teach their teachers and make the classroom a true community of learners. They are giving adults a model of a better world.
