Board of Directors
Noble Kelly, BEd, MEd (President):
Noble Kelly has dedicated his career to education as a secondary school teacher in BC since 1991. With a Post Baccalaureate in Educational Technology and a Masters in Adult Learning and Global Change, he's a highly qualified educator. He served as an Adjunct Professor at UBC's Teacher Education Department and has mentored teachers for Simon Fraser University's Educational Technology program.
In 2006, he founded Education Beyond Borders (EBB). Noble co-chaired the BC Council for International Cooperation (BCCIC) from 2013 to 2017 and facilitated workshops for the Peace and Global Education Provincial Specialist Association. His international experience includes education reform and teacher training in South Africa, Ethiopia, Guyana, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Currently, he works as an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Belonging Coordinator at an independent school, while passionately focusing his off-hours on developing innovative practices for global education through EBB.
Dr. Carolin Rekar Munro, CHRL, CTDP (Vice President)
Carolin Rekar Munro is a Professor and Intellectual Lead for Leadership and Human Resources, and MBA Mentorship Coordinator at Royal Roads University. She's also an Adjunct Professor for Central Michigan University and was a Visiting Professor at Mount Meru University, Tanzania, teaching HR, Organizational Behaviour, and Strategy.
Carolin runs an international consulting practice, collaborating with leaders on workplace learning, strategic architecture, multigenerational unity, leadership development, hybrid facilitation, and organizational renewal. She holds Master's and Doctoral degrees in HR and Leadership from the University of Toronto.
Since 2012, Carolin has been an active member of Education Beyond Borders, leading projects in Tanzania and collaborating on remote workshops. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Performance and Learning and is an Academic Ambassador, VP Leadership, and Conference Organizer for the Annual International Conference on Communication and Management in Greece.
Kin Lo, PhD, FCPA, FCA (Treasurer):
Dr. Lo is the Senior Associate Dean of Students at UBC Sauder School of Business. He holds the CPA Professorship in Accounting established by the Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia (CPABC). After receiving a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary, he articled at PwC and subsequently earned his doctorate from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. His research has been published widely and he has served as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Accounting and Economics from 2003-2011. Aside from research and teaching, Kin is also active in the professional accounting community serving on provincial and national committees such as the Academic Advisory Council for the Accounting Standards Board of Canada. He was elected as Fellow of CPABC (FCPA) in 2013.
Maureen Hillman BA, Certificate in Education, MA (Secretary):
Maureen Hillman, a former high school and college ESL teacher, served as Modern Languages Coordinator, where she spearheaded a project to develop students' conversational English skills. She also designed an English curriculum for an engineering program in rural Senegal and facilitated teacher professional development.
After retiring, Maureen taught French conversation workshops for newcomers to Quebec. She also designed and delivered workshops for Développement, Expertise et Solidarité Internationale (DESI) and co-authored a guide on distance learning for them. Joining Education Beyond Borders (EBB) in 2011, she participated in programs in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, collaborating on in-country workshops. Since 2020, Maureen has focused on designing and delivering remote workshops for EBB, creating resources on Social and Emotional Learning, and exploring how to best support distance learning initiatives.
Kimberly Brown, BEd, MEd (Social Media Coordinator)
Kimberly, a retired Regina Public Schools administrator, now enjoys substitute teaching. Since 2010, she's traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with Education Beyond Borders (EBB). Since 2020, she has focused on designing and delivering remote workshops on Social and Emotional Learning for Ugandan teachers.
In Fall 2022, Kimberly worked in Kolkata, India, with Her Future Coalition (HFC), designing and teaching an English Language Program, and continues remote English practice with students there. She holds Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from the University of Regina, specializing in Curriculum and Instruction, and has studied Reconciliation through Education at UBC. Kimberly's career has centered on supporting students and families in Regina's community schools, fostering family involvement, creating welcoming environments, and setting high expectations. Her commitment to EBB's work stems from her belief that all students can succeed with proper support.
Shannon Howlett
Shannon Howlett is a dedicated teacher and IB Coordinator at Ashbury College in Ottawa. Her passion for East Africa began with a transformative trip in 2007. She joined Education Beyond Borders (EBB) in 2008 while teaching in a Maasai village school in Tanzania, later becoming Project Lead for EBB's initial projects in King'ori and Ngarenanyuki.
Shannon champions student leadership, helping establish early student-leadership conferences for EBB. She's led Canadian student groups to Tanzania twice and is co-hosting another trip in December 2025. With 25 years in education, including four years at the International School of Moshi (now UWCEA) in Tanzania, Shannon has deep ties to the region. She and her husband, Abdullie, who is from Arusha, Tanzania, own a safari business there. Shannon loves to travel, but her true joy is spending time in East African villages, practicing her Swahili.
Francis Mureithi
Francis Mureithi, a Kenyan high school teacher of English, Literature, and Computer Studies, is in his 30th year of teaching. He holds an MEd from Aga Khan University, a BEd from the University of Nairobi, and a Post Grad Dip in ICT. Francis is passionate about technology integration in education, particularly mobile learning, and his MEd thesis focused on media's role in enhancing learning and health.
Joining Education Beyond Borders (EBB) in 2009, Francis found his niche in ed-tech, volunteering to share ICT integration skills. As a trained facilitator trainer, he has been involved in all EBB activities since, rising to Coordinator for EBB in Kenya. He recently hosted a successful EBB International Teachers Conference. Committed to reactivating teacher engagement despite Kenya's curriculum transition (8-4-4 to CBC), Francis, with EBB's support, is determined to equip teachers with enhanced methodologies.
William Sengombe
William Sengombe, a dedicated high school teacher in Central Uganda, holds advanced degrees in education and a Bachelor of Science with Education. He teaches Chemistry and Physics, fostering a positive learning environment that inspires students, parents, and teachers.
Since 2014, William has been the Uganda Coordinator for Education Beyond Borders (EBB). Under his leadership, a robust professional development committee for teachers was established, providing training in social-emotional learning, learner-centered teaching, classroom management, leadership, and child upbringing.
He also chairs the Uganda Martyrs Saving Group in Kayunga, offering financial literacy, loans, and investment opportunities that have empowered many members to achieve personal and financial goals. William strongly believes in building the potential of children and adults, enabling self-reliance through support from home, school, and the community by empowering all stakeholders.
